Mentai France is French-style bread filled with mentaiko (seasoned pollock roe) and butter, then baked. It is well worth trying when you visit Fukuoka. One of my favorites is Full Full’s Mentai France, with delicious mentaiko and bread that is just as good.
My wife introduced me to Full Full. We visited together, and I soon understood why this Mentai France was worth trying. In September 2026, I bought it at both THE FULL FULL HAKATA, near Canal City Hakata, and Full Full Matsuzaki Main Store in Fukuoka’s Higashi Ward.

The mentaiko filling reaches right to the ends, and the bread around it tastes wonderful too. It is also good taken home, frozen, and reheated, but fresh from the bakery is still my favorite.
Tasting Full Full’s Mentai France: Tasty Bread with Mentaiko from End to End
Cut into the bread and you can see plenty of mentaiko inside, right down to the individual grains of roe. I like being able to really taste the mentaiko.

As the photo shows, even the end of the bread had mentaiko inside. Enjoying the filling right through to the last pieces makes the whole loaf more satisfying.
I also loved the bread itself. Even with the mentaiko filling, its flavor comes through. This is a loaf I would recommend to anyone who enjoys both mentaiko and good bread.
Bread Made with Japanese Wheat and Full Full’s Mentaiko Butter
There is a story behind this combination. According to Full Full’s official product story, its Mentai France was created in 2002. It brings together French-style bread made with Japanese wheat and the bakery’s own blend of mentaiko and butter. The official description also highlights the bread’s crisp crust and chewy inside.
Mentai France Price and Size: One Loaf in the Photo
When I bought it at the Hakata and Matsuzaki stores in September 2026, I remember paying about ¥500 per loaf. The official product page listed it at ¥463 before tax when checked on September 28, 2026. Please check the current price including tax at the store.

The amount shown in the photo is one loaf. The cuts make it easier to divide into pieces and share. Full Full’s website also explains that the bread is cut just before it is handed to the customer.
Full Full Hakata: Near Canal City, Two Minutes from Kushida Shrine Station
THE FULL FULL HAKATA is very close to Canal City Hakata. Look for the large Mentai France sign on the wooden exterior.

This location is easy to add to a shopping trip at Canal City or a walk around Hakata. According to the Fukuoka City Subway guide, the nearest station is Kushida Shrine Station on the Nanakuma Line. It makes a pleasant bakery stop during a day of sightseeing.

If you want a freshly baked loaf, ask at the store about that day’s baking schedule. Allow enough time for your visit, especially if you have a Shinkansen or another departure to catch.
I have also written about our visit to LOWYA in Canal City’s East Building and Full Full Hakata. If you are planning a day out in the area, you may find that article useful too.
A Visit to Full Full Matsuzaki Main Store in Higashi Ward
I also visited Full Full Matsuzaki Main Store, a bakery specializing in bread made with Japanese wheat, in Higashi Ward. Trees and plants line the path to the entrance. The greenery around the building made a lasting impression on me.

The familiar Full Full logo hangs above the entrance. The setting is quite different from the central Hakata store, making a visit here enjoyable in its own way.

The main store opens at 8:00, and the official store guide lists both indoor seating and a terrace. It is a place to consider for a morning bakery visit or a day out in Higashi Ward.

How to Pre-order Mentai France
The official product guide says that pre-orders for Mentai France must be placed by the day before pickup. The Matsuzaki store guide also states that phone reservations are accepted only on weekdays, not on weekends or public holidays. Contact the store you plan to visit to discuss your preferred date and pickup time.
Store details were checked against the official website on September 28, 2026. Opening hours and temporary closures may change, so check Full Full’s official announcements before visiting.
Frozen Mentai France at Home: My Air Fryer Experience
The Mentai France I bought at the bakery was also a treat to enjoy later at home. I froze it and reheated it in my air fryer.

You can still clearly see the mentaiko inside after reheating. The bread and filling tasted good together at home too, bringing back a little of the pleasure of that bakery visit. It was nice to enjoy the bread again later at home.
Freeze Leftovers in Portions

The back of the bag explains how to store the bread: cut it into portions, wrap each portion in plastic wrap, and freeze. Dividing it first makes it easier to reheat only what you want to eat. Follow the product label or the store’s advice on how long to keep it.

The Bag’s Reheating Guide: About 3–4 Minutes in a Toaster Oven
| Bread condition | Reheating instructions printed on the bag |
| At room temperature | Reheat as it is in a preheated toaster oven for about 3–4 minutes |
| Frozen | Place aluminum foil underneath, open the bread along the cut, and reheat in a preheated toaster oven for 3–4 minutes |
| If the bread is browning too quickly | Cover the top with aluminum foil to help prevent burning |
| If the bread has hardened | Lightly moisten it with water using a spray bottle or similar before reheating |
These are the toaster oven guidelines printed on the bag in the photo. Do not use them as air fryer settings; adjust for your appliance. Watch the bread as it heats, even in a toaster oven, to avoid burning it. For frozen products bought online or at the station, follow the instructions supplied with that product.
Ordering from Full Full’s Official Online Shop
Full Full also has an official online shop. Its nine-loaf Mentai France set uses a special size for online orders: about 16 cm long, designed to fit easily in a toaster oven. If a visit to Fukuoka is not possible, the online shop is another option to explore for enjoying it at home.
Smaller Frozen Mentai France Spotted Inside Hakata Station’s Shinkansen Gates
I also saw Full Full’s Mentai France for sale at a shop inside the Shinkansen ticket gates at Hakata Station. It was a frozen version, smaller than the bread I bought at the bakery.
I have not bought this version yet, so I am sharing only what I saw. It caught my eye as a possible food gift to pick up when traveling by Shinkansen. Ask at the counter about availability, stock, and how long it can be carried.
Visiting Full Full Hakata? Try the Mentai France Fresh
Thanks to my wife’s introduction, Full Full has become a bakery I want to return to for more Mentai France. I love the combination of mentaiko right to the ends and bread that tastes good in its own right.
Freezing it to enjoy later at home is a good option, but for your first taste, I recommend Mentai France freshly baked at the shop. Consider a stop when you are walking around Canal City or heading out to Higashi Ward.
