A Date at Canal City Hakata: LOWYA Furniture and FULL FULL’s Mentaiko Bread

My wife and I went on a date to the newly reopened East Building at Canal City Hakata. Our main stop was LOWYA, a furniture and home decor store, where we wanted to look at dining tables. Since a dining table is something we use every day, we wanted to take our time and see the options in person.
After browsing the furniture, we stopped at nearby THE FULL FULL HAKATA. My wife recommended this bakery, and the mentaiko French bread we bought there was delicious! Mentaiko is seasoned pollock roe, used here as a filling for the bread. Here is our date around Canal City, combining furniture shopping with a tasty bakery stop.
From Kushida Shrine Station to the East Building via Canal City
We got off at Kushida Shrine (Kushida-jinja-mae) Station on the Fukuoka City Subway Nanakuma Line. Canal City Hakata is just a short walk from the station. We walked through the shopping complex to reach the East Building.
With its curved buildings and waterside plaza, Canal City makes the walk between shops part of the outing. Even when you have a specific purpose, such as looking for furniture, taking in the scenery makes it feel like a day out.
According to LOWYA’s official store guide, the Canal City Hakata store is about a 3-minute walk from Kushida Shrine Station and a 10-minute walk from Hakata Station. The entrance to the complex and the store itself are in different places, so look for the East Building when heading to LOWYA.
The East Building Reopened on September 4, 2026, After About Three Years
The East Building had been temporarily closed since May 2023, but it reopened on Friday, September 4, 2026. According to Canal City Hakata’s official announcement, it returned with a total of 16 stores.
Alongside LOWYA, the building has stores selling fashion and everyday household goods. It is a good place to explore the refreshed spaces and look for things you might enjoy using at home.
LOWYA Spans Three Floors: See Furniture from Its Online Store in Person
LOWYA is a furniture and home decor brand that started online. It now also has physical stores, where you can see and touch furniture you have been considering on its website.
The size of this store surprised me. LOWYA Canal City Hakata covers the first, second, and third floors of the East Building. The company’s opening announcement describes it as the largest LOWYA store in the brand’s history at the time of opening.
Measurements on a screen do not always tell you how a piece of furniture will feel in your room. Seeing the tabletop color, the shape of the legs, and the chairs together makes it easier to picture the furniture in your own home before buying.
Looking for a Dining Table for Everyday Meals
We are looking for a dining table, so this visit was a chance to gather ideas before making a decision. We took photos of a light-colored round table and another table with an extendable top.
This display pairs a round tabletop with chairs that have gray seats. The nearby storage furniture uses similar colors, making it helpful for imagining the whole dining area as well as the table itself.
The other display had a guide showing how to extend the tabletop. A table may need to work for everyday meals as well as occasions when guests come over. Along with its appearance, it is worth thinking about how you will use it.
We did not buy a table on this visit, but LOWYA became a strong option in our search for a dining table. Taking time to see the furniture and narrow down the choices is part of the fun, even without deciding right away.
What to Check Before You Visit a Furniture Store
If you are looking for a dining table, making a few notes before you go can help you compare the options. Knowing your available space and how you plan to use the table also makes it easier to decide what to check in the store.
- Measure the width and depth of the space. Allow room to pull out chairs and walk around the table.
- Consider how many people will use it daily and how much space you need for guests. For an extendable table, check that it fits when fully extended.
- If you plan to keep your current chairs, check their seat and armrest heights, along with the position of the table legs.
- Check the delivery route and the delivery and assembly terms. Make sure the furniture can pass through your doorway and hallway, and ask about any extra charges.
If you have a particular item in mind, check the display items on the official LOWYA Canal City Hakata store page before visiting. Having a shortlist will make it easier to find what you want in such a large store.
Mentaiko French Bread at THE FULL FULL HAKATA, Recommended by My Wife
After LOWYA, we headed to THE FULL FULL HAKATA, right near the East Building. Known for its mentaiko French bread, this bakery was my wife’s recommendation. Our furniture-shopping trip now included the pleasure of picking up some delicious bread.
FULL FULL’s main bakery is in Matsuzaki, Higashi Ward, Fukuoka. Its Hakata location is easy to include in a trip around Canal City. The official shop introduction also describes a shop layout where customers can see the ovens and the bread being prepared.
Plenty of Mentaiko and a Flavor I Would Come Back For
The mentaiko French bread we bought had a generous amount of filling. My reaction was simple: “This is really delicious!” Thanks to my wife’s recommendation, I found something I would happily eat again.
According to FULL FULL’s official product page, its mentaiko French bread was first created in 2002. It combines French bread made with Japanese-grown wheat and a filling of mentaiko and butter, and the recipe has been refined over the years. The bread itself has also been developed to offer a satisfying crust and a chewy center.

After looking for furniture, we bought bread to enjoy at home. Even when you do not make a big purchase, this route gives you something delicious to take back with you.
Enjoy It Reheated at Home: Check the Instructions on the Bag
The takeaway bag also had instructions for reheating in a toaster oven. For bread at room temperature, the suggested time is 3–4 minutes in a preheated toaster oven. The instructions say to watch for burning and cover the top with aluminum foil if needed.
That timing is the guide printed on the bag for a toaster oven. Other appliances, including air fryers, may need a different amount of time. Follow your appliance’s instructions and keep an eye on the bread as it heats.
A Date Around Canal City with Furniture and Good Food
Our route was Kushida Shrine Station → a walk through Canal City → LOWYA in the East Building → THE FULL FULL HAKATA. Being able to walk between the furniture store and the bakery makes them an easy pair of stops.
We are still considering our dining table options, but seeing the furniture in person helped us think through the choices. The mentaiko French bread recommended by my wife was another lovely find.
