In Tsunabamachi, Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City, there is a confectionery shop that has been making chocolate since 1942. Its name is Chocolate Shop Main Store. A phrase displayed outside calls it “where Hakata’s chocolate story began”, and it has long been loved by local people.
For this visit, my wife asked for financiers, so I chose three varieties at the shop and brought them home. The one that left the strongest impression was Premium Yaki Chocolat, a chocolate financier covered in milk chocolate. Along with the delicious sweets, the warm and attentive service—from the greeting at the entrance to checkout—made shopping here a pleasure.
Founded in 1942: “Where Hakata’s Chocolate Story Began”
Chocolate Shop was founded in Hakata’s Tenyamachi district in 1942. In 2026, it celebrates its 84th anniversary as one of Fukuoka’s best-known historic confectionery shops.
According to the official introduction to Chocolate Shop Main Store, the shop moved from Tenyamachi to its current location in Tsunabamachi in 2004 to mark its 60th anniversary. Five parking spaces are available in front of the shop, and it is also within walking distance of Gofukumachi and Nakasu-Kawabata subway stations.
The shop offers rows of chocolates, fresh cakes, baked sweets, gelato, and more. You can easily buy a single treat to enjoy at home, while the wide selection of boxed and gift-wrapped items also makes this a convenient place to look for a Fukuoka souvenir or a present for someone special.
A Warm Welcome That Begins with “Welcome to Chocolate Shop”
When I entered, a staff member greeted me with “Welcome to Chocolate Shop.” Hearing the shop’s name instead of a standard greeting made the welcome feel more personal and memorable.
The staff were attentive from the product explanation through checkout, and I enjoyed a comfortable shopping experience. The delicious sweets have been loved for generations, but the care shown to each customer is another reason I would like to visit again.
During my visit, financiers, canelés, tarts, and other sweets were arranged in a display with a preparation area visible behind it. Even choosing what to buy was enjoyable, and seeing freshly made sweets up close adds a special sense of excitement to the main store.
My Wife Asked for Financiers
When I asked my wife what she wanted, she chose financiers. I decided which ones to buy after looking at the selection in the shop. I brought home three items: two classic Hakata Financiers and one Premium Yaki Chocolat.

Premium Yaki Chocolat: A Financier Covered in Chocolate
Of the three items, I gave the Premium Yaki Chocolat to my wife. It is a regular chocolate financier covered with a slightly thick layer of milk chocolate. The official baked sweets page also recommends it to people who enjoy both chocolate and baked sweets.

After hearing her comment, I wanted to try it too. I returned later and bought another Premium Yaki Chocolat, partly so I could photograph it for this blog. The cake was moist, and the combination of the financier and its outer chocolate coating made it a satisfying sweet that felt fitting for a chocolate specialty shop.

The financiers I bought cost around ¥300 each, making them an easy choice for a small personal treat. A selection of several flavors would also work well as a gift for a chocolate lover or as a souvenir from Fukuoka.
