What is Mount Sarakura?

Mount Sarakura, standing at 622 meters, is a symbolic mountain of Kitakyushu. From its summit, you can enjoy sweeping views of the cityscape, the Kanmon Strait, and industrial clusters, forming a stunning panorama. At night, the view transforms into what’s known as the “Billion Dollar Night View”, a spectacle admired both in Japan and worldwide.

Kitakyushu has also claimed the top spot twice in a row as one of Japan’s New Top 3 Night View Cities, chosen by 6,610 certified night view tourism experts. With its convenient access, Mount Sarakura is a favorite for tourists and couples alike.

Easy Access to the Summit with Cable Car & Slope Car

One of the charms of Mount Sarakura is its accessibility. Although you cannot drive directly to the summit, the cable car and slope car make the journey effortless, taking just about 10 minutes. The ride itself is a highlight, offering magnificent mountain views, especially from the slope car.

Cable Car & Slope Car Information

    Round-trip Cable Car & Slope Car Ticket
    Adults: ¥1,230 / Children: ¥620

  • Operating Hours:
    April–October: 10:00–22:00 (Last ascent: 21:20)
    November–March: 10:00–20:00 (Last ascent: 19:20)

  • Closed Days:
    Every Tuesday (except holidays, April 30, August 13, and December 24, 2024)

Stunning Views for Daytime & Nighttime

While we enjoyed the daytime scenery, Mount Sarakura is best known for its night views. From the observatory, you can see all of Kitakyushu, with the sea and factory lights creating a breathtaking view. At night, the so-called “Billion Dollar Night View” comes alive.

The observatory also features a restaurant with large windows, allowing you to enjoy a meal while taking in the beautiful scenery. It’s the perfect spot for a romantic evening.

Recommended Dining Spot

Near the cable car station, you’ll find the quaint “Fumoto Shokudo,” known for its cozy atmosphere. Its rustic charm feels like stepping into a countryside home, complete with just three tables and a warm, welcoming vibe from the owner, who runs the eatery solo.

    This simple yet heartwarming noodle dish is perfect for chilly days. However, since the eatery is run by one person, it’s best suited for small groups with time to spare.
