Udon Wasuke

When it comes to udon in Fukuoka, ‘Hakata udon’ is well-known. However, besides Hakata udon, there is another type of udon that is beloved by the people of Fukuoka. It’s called ‘Buzen Udon.’ Buzen Udon refers to the udon served by udon shops belonging to the ‘Buzen Urauchikai’, a group originating from Kitakyushu.

“Udon Wasuke” is also a popular udon shop in Fukuoka, affiliated with the Buzen Urauchikai.

What kind of restaurant is “Udon Wasuke”?

“Udon Wasuke” is a popular restaurant in Fukuoka City’s Jonan Ward, Torikai area, known for serving Buzen-style udon. It is so popular that lines form even before it opens for business.

“Wasuke” is affiliated with the renowned group “Buzen Urauchikai,” well-known among udon enthusiasts. Buzen Urauchikai is an exclusive group that only allows membership to select shops that have completed a rigorous year of training. Buzen-style udon is characterized by its thin, translucent noodles with a satisfying texture, and the deliciousness of their tempura, including the popular burdock root tempura, is also highly regarded.

Wasuke is a highly regarded shop within the Buzen Urauchikai group, and it is beloved by many local residents.

I ordered the Gobō Tempura Udon.

This time, I ordered the Gobō Tempura Udon.

The Gobō Tempura Udon was delicious, but the size of the tempura was quite big, covering the noodles in the bowl.
The Gobō Tempura is delicious even when soaked in the broth.

The Gobō Tempura is huge! It’s so big that it’s a bit difficult to eat without a separate plate. But I heard that if you ask the staff, they can provide you with one.

I’ll dig into the Gobō Tempura. The crispy and sweet flavor of the gobō (burdock root) complements the udon perfectly. The noodles are also delicious! They are smooth, chewy, and have a satisfying texture. This is what true Buzen Udon is all about.

However, I made one mistake this time. Udon enthusiasts usually sprinkle Buzen Urachika’s seven-spice chili powder on their udon while eating, but I forgot to do that and finished my meal. I want to make sure not to forget it next time.

The noodles are delicious too.

If you’re going by bicycle, it seems difficult to park in front of the shop, and I didn’t see any bicycle parking lots nearby. However, there is a supermarket in the immediate vicinity that has a bicycle parking area. I hope this information is helpful.
