Hanabi Dōranbachi (Kurume City, Fukuoka)

Hanabi Dōranbachi is a traditional fireworks ritual in Kurume City and is designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Fukuoka Prefecture. With a history of over 360 years, it is held every year on September 15. The name originates from the way bees fly out all at once when their nest is disturbed. A huge tube-shaped structure, about 2.5 meters in diameter and 4 meters tall, is filled with gunpowder. Once lit, a thunderous roar and a storm of sparks light up the night sky in a spectacular display.
