In the quiet streets of Tenyamachi, Hakata Ward, you will find the historic café Café Brasileiro. Opened in 1934 (Showa 9), it is known as the oldest surviving café in Fukuoka. The name “Brasileiro” means “Brazilian man” in Portuguese.

History and Atmosphere of Café Brasileiro

Café Brasileiro was originally opened by the Coffee Bureau of São Paulo, Brazil, to introduce Brazilian coffee to Japan. It has a very unique history.

The café has two floors with a classic, retro feel. You can reach the second floor by a spiral staircase. Cute Western-style lights, paintings on the walls, and old photos of the shop create a nostalgic atmosphere. Soft classical music plays, making the time feel slow and peaceful.

Homemade Coffee and Delicious Western-Style Meals

I visited at lunchtime. I wanted to try the popular minced meat cutlet, but it was sold out! It seems you can make a reservation, so next time, I will definitely book ahead.

Instead, I ordered the omelette rice (regular size). It was filled with lots of vegetables and wrapped in a fluffy omelette. The flavor was well balanced and very elegant.

The lunch set came with a fresh salad and a cup of homemade coffee. The coffee is freshly roasted and has a rich aroma and deep taste. The salad was also fresh and full of flavor!

Warm Hospitality Adds to the Charm

The friendly and gentle service from the staff, especially the woman managing the hall, made the café even more comfortable. Spending time in this retro atmosphere, where the Showa-era café culture is still alive, felt like pure luxury.
